What Is Spades?

The Spades card game is famous and has been used over time, being a favorite in any card game due to its ideal combination of tactics, cooperation, and competency. Developed as a game played by four players in permanent partnerships, it requires a standard deck of 52 cards and it requires the participants to outwit, outbid and outplay their rivals during each round.

Spades is a mix of bidding, prediction as well as strategy of playing. It started in the United States in the 1930s and soon became popular among card players and has continued to flourish to this day offline and online. The main objective? Win as many tricks as your team has offered – no more, no less.

Teams and Setup

  • Number of Players: 4 (two teams of two)
  • Deck: Standard 52 cards
  • Partnerships: Players sit opposite their partners.
  • Direction of Play: Clockwise

Each player is dealt 13 cards, and the game proceeds through bidding, playing tricks, and scoring.

Rank of Cards

Cards rank from highest to lowest:

A (Ace), K (King), Q (Queen), J (Jack), 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

Spades are always the trump suit, meaning they outrank all other suits.

The Bidding Phase

Bidding determines how many tricks each team aims to win.

  • Each player bids a number between 0 and 13, representing how many tricks they expect to take.
  • The team’s total bid is the combined number of their two players’ bids.
  • Players must bid at least one unless they declare a Nil bid (attempting to win no tricks).
  • No player can pass or change their bid once made.

Example: If North bids 2 and South bids 4, their team’s goal is to win at least 6 tricks.

Nil Bid: A Nil bid means the player aims to win zero tricks.

A successful Nil earns +100 points, but failure results in –100 points.

The partner still plays normally, trying to meet their combined bid.

The Play of the Hand

  • The player to the dealer’s left leads first (any card except a spade).
  • Players must follow suit if possible; if not, they may play any card.
  • A trick containing a spade is won by the highest spade played.
  • Otherwise, the highest card of the suit wins.
  • Spades cannot be led until they’ve been “broken” (played on another suit).
  • The winner of a trick leads the next one.

A round continues until all 13 tricks are played.

Special Terms:

  • Breaking Spades: When the first spade is played in the game.
  • Boston: When one team wins all 13 tricks in a round.

Scoring System

Scoring in Spades rewards accurate bidding and punishes overconfidence:

  • If a team meets its bid, they score 10 points per trick bid.
  • Any extra tricks (overtricks or “bags”) are worth +1 point each.
  • Collecting 10 bags results in a –100 point penalty (Sandbagging Rule).
  • Failing to make your bid costs –10 points per trick bid.

Nil Scoring:

  • Successful Nil = +100 points
  • Failed Nil = –100 points

Winning the Game:

The first team to reach 500 points wins. If both reach 500 in the same deal, the higher score wins.

Example:

If your team bids 6 and wins 7 tricks, you score 61 points (60 for the bid + 1 for the extra trick). If your team bids 5 but wins only 4, you lose 50 points.

Strategy Tips for Spades Players

  1. Bid Wisely: Don’t overestimate your hand – underbidding costs points over time.
  2. Track Cards: Remember which high cards have been played.
  3. Protect a Nil: If your partner bids Nil, help shield them by taking dangerous tricks.
  4. Break Spades Strategically: Wait until it benefits your team.
  5. Manage Bags: Don’t collect unnecessary overtricks that risk penalties.
