What Is Iron Lung?

Iron Lung is a short, dread-driven submarine horror game. Your mission is to explore a mysterious Blood Ocean discovered on a barren moon and photograph anomalous locations deep beneath its surface. The twist? You can’t see where you’re going.

There is only one porthole in the submarine, and it must remain sealed due to the crushing pressure outside. Instead of direct visibility, you rely on:

  • An incomplete satellite map
  • Proximity sensors
  • Sound cues
  • A primitive external camera

Based on the success of the game, a movie adaptation inspired by its story and claustrophobic Blood Ocean setting was released in January 2026.

How to Play Iron Lung

Iron Lung embraces experimental minimalist gameplay. Your senses are intentionally limited, forcing you to rely on instruments rather than vision.

To progress, you must:

  • Navigate using coordinates
  • Adjust speed and direction carefully
  • Stop at marked locations
  • Use the grainy external camera to take required photos
  • The tension builds not from what you see but from what you don’t see.

The sound design and original soundtrack, inspired by the atmospheric work of Aubrey Hodges (Doom 64), amplify the suffocating mood.

Controls Guide

Iron Lung uses simple, focused controls to reinforce its minimalist design:

  • W / S: Adjust submarine speed (forward / backward)
  • A / D: Turn the submarine
  • Mouse: Interact with controls and camera interface
  • Space / Enter (when prompted): Take photographs
  • Esc: Pause menu

What makes Iron Lung stand out in the horror genre is restraint. It’s designed to be completed in under an hour, yet it leaves a lasting psychological impact. Just you, an incomplete map, and the unsettling awareness that something massive might be moving in the blood below.
